Enrichment at Bishop
The largest allocation of PTO funding each year is towards enrichment - bringing in outside educators and performers to the school to complement and enhance the curriculum and the school themes of Respect, Responsibility and Regard for others. This is coordinated by the PTO Enrichment Committee. Enrichment can occur in the form of large group assemblies or smaller scale presentations or workshops in support of, and coordinated with, specific areas of grade-level curriculum. Last year, special assemblies and other activities throughout the school included:
Each year, the Enrichment Committee adjusts and enhances the programming based on teacher input.
Check the PTO website, calendar and backpack mail for details as dates are finalized for the 2016-17 school year.
Enrichment plans for the 2016-17 school year will be presented at the October PTO meeting.
Enrichment in 2015-16 included:
Museum of Science - Weather: Wind, Water, & Temperature - assembly for 4th grade
The museum educator will demonstrate how atmospheric phenomena interact with each other to create the weather we experience every day. Students will watch a hot air balloon launch toward the ceiling, pressurize a tank to create enough wind to power a cannon, and see a cloud form before their eyes.
WCVB Weather School visit with Meteorologist Danielle Vollmar - assembly for 4th grade.
The 4th graders will gather for an in-person, interactive presentation on the science of forecasting the weather.
Museum of Science - Animal Adaptations - sessions for 5th grade
Students will expand their understanding of biological adaptations by observing both skulls and live animals. They will see up to three live animals from different groups, place the animals in their correct classes, and learn about specific adaptations each has developed. After observing the live animals, students engage in a hands-on activity in which they become scientists and examine particular skulls to determine how the animal may have adapted.
Rob Surette - Amazing Hero Art speed painter, All-school assembly
We are delighted to announce that Rob Surette, Amazing Hero Art Painter and Arlington native, will return to Bishop for an all-school performance of his "Be Somebody!" show on Friday, December 18th at 9AM. Surette has visited Bishop twice previously and his presentation has been a favorite with students and teachers. This will be a one hour, all-school assembly. The PTO will purchase one of the finished works Surette will create during his performance. We hope this will be a fun, festive, and inspiring way for the school to gather together before the winter break.
