Bishop Food Policy and Allergy Considerations
Bishop has a non-food birthday and holiday celebration policy. We encourage students and families who wish to celebrate birthdays in the classroom, to bring non-food items such as stickers, pencils or any other small item. Classroom/holiday celebrations may include games, crafts or other activities.
Food, other than daily snacks, is acceptable for curriculum-related events. Teachers will consult with the principal before any food is brought into the classroom.
Although having no food in classrooms for holidays and birthdays alleviates some of the issues related to food allergies, it is still important for Room Parents to check-in with classroom families at the beginning of the year. Allergens can be present in a number of craft materials and everyday items such as playdough, paper mache, some finger paints (wheat/gluten) and certain handsoaps or creams (almond/oat/coconut). Allergens may also be present in certain art/science projects that use food products.
