Bishop Food Policy and Allergy Considerations
Bishop has a non-food birthday and holiday celebration policy. We encourage students and families who wish to celebrate birthdays in the classroom, to bring non-food items such as stickers, pencils or any other small item. Classroom/holiday celebrations may include games, crafts or other activities.
Food, other than daily snacks, is acceptable for curriculum-related events. Teachers will consult with the principal before any food is brought into the classroom.
Although having no food in classrooms for holidays and birthdays alleviates some of the issues related to food allergies, it is still important for Class Parents to check-in with the parents of allergic children at the beginning of the year. Allergens can be present in a number of craft materials and everyday items - just some examples are playdoh, paper mache, and some finger paints (wheat/gluten) and certain handsoaps or creams (almond/oat/coconut). Allergens also can be present in certain art/science projects that use food products. At the beginning of the year, Class Parents should ask class parents specifically if there are any allergies they should be aware of and which specific products or projects may be an issue for their children. Certainly any time Class Parents are helping with any curriculum activity involving food, all of the parents of children with allergies should be contacted to be sure the foods are safe.
